This month, we’re spotlighting the owner of Sugar N Spice, Katy Lambson. Read on for a glimpse into this amazing, creative gal!
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am the founder, and owner of Sugar N Spice Service in Saratoga Springs, UT. You can also find me on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google +, and YouTube (see links at the end of the post). More importantly, I’m a wife, daughter, friend, and all-around fun-loving girl!
What one word would you use to describe yourself, and why?
Passionate! I believe you can bring anything you desire into reality. As long as you are passionate about a goal, believe it will happen, and work hard, anything can be accomplished! I am young and relatively new to this industry, but I’ve already accomplished more in a short amount of time than I could have imagined. It definitely helps to have an extremely supportive family and husband who have been there for me, celebrating every step of the way.
How did you get started in the nail industry?
I wanted to do something fulfilling and rewarding that allowed me to combine my creative talents with my passion for pampering. I’m a very social person, and I was looking for away to interact with people from all walks of life. I started doing nails part time after my corporate day-job. After hearing friends and family admire, appreciate, and encourage my work, I realized I could turn my passion into a career and be happy to go to work every day. That is exactly where I am now. I help contribute to my family financially while making a dream come true doing what I LOVE! My love for nails has also led me into the online beauty community as well. I now get to share with so many others! A major highlight for me was being featured in NAILS magazine.
What/Who inspires your work?
I take inspiration from many different things. Music, fashion, nature, art—I love to think outside of the box! My most recent project of matching nail art to custom-created jewelry was inspired by my family. I now offer rings, necklaces, bracelets, and pins created using polish or Shellac to match a client’s nail service. And I love working on Nailed It: art posters created using actual polish and polish bottles. Abstract designs are my favorite style because there are no rules or limits. My own nails typically correlate with the seasons or my mood. On special occasions, I might coordinate my nails with my outfit. I love to try new products and techniques.
Are there any tools you can’t live without?
My cuticle implement! I love how well it works to clear and clean the nails. I use it for every mani, pedi, shellac, and glitter toe service to prepare the nails properly. It’s my go-to tool. Another tool I always have is my clean up brush. Having a small rounded brush for creating crisp lines and cleaning cuticles is a must! Everyone should have one, especially when it comes to nail art.
What are your favorite techniques/styles?
I am a huge fan of working on the natural nail. It’s important to me to be able to enhance what you already have and make it even more beautiful. Squoval nails are my current favorite shape. I also love foils, stamping, and additives.
What tips can you offer others?
Dream—dream big! Then work hard, think outside the box, be creative, and tap into your natural resources. That’s what makes you unique and will set you apart. You can and will be successful if you believe and work hard for your goals. Never give up your passion, no matter how many people may doubt your success, no matter how many challenges arise. Use that to motivate you to succeed, learn, grow, and be the best.
